The BookViral Review:
Epic fantasy often begins with a prophecy, a hidden heir, or a reluctant hero. Matthew Devitt takes a different approach. In The Quest for Freedom, the opening volume of The Conquest Trilogy, readers meet a protagonist who has already chosen his path. Fletcher Rush is not searching for destiny—he has spent eleven years preparing to change the fate of his entire species.
Set on the world of Affer, where humanity has endured centuries of enslavement following its defeat in the Great War, the novel establishes its central conflict with remarkable clarity. Humans have become a conquered people, scattered among powerful races who regard them as little more than property. While most have accepted their circumstances, Fletcher refuses to do so. His carefully planned escape from slavery becomes the spark that ignites a rebellion capable of reshaping the world.
From its opening chapters, The Quest for Freedom embraces momentum. What begins as a daring prison-break narrative quickly evolves into a sweeping military fantasy filled with battles, recruitment, conquest, strategic planning, and hard-fought victories. Devitt rarely allows the story to stand still, creating a fast-moving narrative that continually drives Fletcher and his growing movement toward ever greater ambitions.
At the heart of the story is the friendship between Fletcher and Ji. Their partnership provides much of the novel’s emotional foundation, balancing the darker elements of the narrative with humour, loyalty, and genuine camaraderie. As the dangers increase and the rebellion expands, their bond remains one of the story’s strongest and most engaging elements.
Fletcher himself is an intriguing protagonist. Driven by an unwavering commitment to free humanity, he possesses a determination that borders on obsession. His willingness to endure hardship, make sacrifices, and do whatever is necessary to achieve victory becomes one of his defining traits. Whether leading soldiers into battle, forging weapons for the cause, or devising strategies against seemingly impossible odds, Fletcher remains a compelling force at the centre of the narrative.
The world-building is another notable strength. Affer feels expansive and lived-in, shaped by centuries of conflict, prejudice, and shifting power. The ruined human capital of Admont stands out in particular, serving as both a powerful reminder of humanity’s downfall and a symbol of its potential resurgence. Devitt successfully creates a setting that feels larger than the immediate story while never losing sight of the characters driving events forward.
As the rebellion gathers strength, the scope of the novel broadens considerably. The arrival of allies such as Tor Rendin and Crystal, alongside adversaries including Light Litchtree and Queen Rinn, steadily transforms the conflict from a local uprising into a war that threatens entire kingdoms. Each character contributes to the growing scale of the story, helping to expand both its military and political dimensions without distracting from the central struggle for freedom.
Beneath the action, the novel explores themes of oppression, loyalty, sacrifice, leadership, and perseverance. The fight for freedom remains at the heart of every major decision, giving the larger military campaign a strong emotional core. Readers are continually reminded that Fletcher’s goal extends far beyond personal survival—he seeks nothing less than the liberation of every human on Affer.
With its relentless pacing, large-scale battles, memorable cast, and ambitious world-building, The Quest for Freedom delivers an entertaining opening chapter in what promises to be an expansive fantasy saga. Readers who enjoy military fantasy, rebellion narratives, and stories of determined underdogs rising against overwhelming odds will find much to admire here. By the final pages, Matthew Devitt leaves little doubt that humanity’s fight for freedom has only just begun.
