The BookViral Review:

In terms of pure entertainment value, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more pulse-pounding read than Secret Specter with Rebecca Hawke confidently equipped to join the legacy of great fictional action.

Fluctuating between the unremitting energy of “John Wick” and the intrigue of a John Le Carré novel, Secret Specter quickly finds a happy medium between the two. And unlike far too many new releases in the thriller genre, it doesn’t favour style over substance with Brooks getting the balance just right.

Haunted by her past Rebecca is a hardened character whose volatile blend of dedication and guiltless expediency keeps us off balance. A believable, sympathetic character who’s complex enough to deserve more than formula action scenes and that’s exactly what Brooks gives her.

Virtuosic kick-ass writing can be its own reward, but readers still need to care about whose ass it is, and why it’s being kicked and we feel Rebecca’s need for the truth and revenge in deep, painful and personal terms as Brooks ramps up the suspense and action without the genre tendency to slip into easy shock tactics. Taking the time for some quiet, even spare moments to emphasize Rebecca’s calm and apartness.

With plausible, literate dialogue Rebecca’s showdowns always contain an undeniable edgy sense of excitement. Brooks is certainly not one to put high gloss on formulaic action and you know from the start you’re never going to get bored with a Rebecca Hawke novel!

A slick, diverting read and a strong start to Brooks’ Rebecca Hawke series Secret Specter: A Heart-Stopping Thriller of Deceit and Espionage is highly recommended!
