The BookViral Review:

An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, Siren Song is an epic mosaic of interrelated characters and the ripples their actions leave in their wake.

On this level, Siren Song is the kind of read that leaves you feeling wrung out and deep in reflection as King moves us with vivid human encounters in a coincidental world,

Effectively building dread and emotional tension as events triggered by religious fervour and human weakness rapidly multiply, King employs a deterministically grim mindset in the cause of Siren Song’s philosophical aspirations and it’s gripping all the way. With characters who act reprehensibly in the name of honour, justice and religion like Jamal, Mo and Saeed and who never seem to understand how they are being manipulated.

Capable of shocking readers when they least expect it King succeeds brilliantly in weaving multiple stories together, taking time to explore depth of character and their relationships as the suspense builds throughout with each plot thread a thing of exquisite design.

But what leaves you reeling, though, is the diversity of his characters. There’s Jill who is abducted and subjected to multiple horrific and prolonged rapes, Ayaan whose disenchantment leads her into the arms of the pious Imam Khalifa with devastating consequences and the morally conflicted President of the United States.  A particularly clever touch is the omnipotent perspective that King introduces and together they create a mosaic of images that fully engage us with an unflinching blend of hyper-realism, visual complexity and powerful existentialist themes.

A superb kaleidoscope of a novel that casts a dark spell over its readers Siren Song is an unreservedly recommended Golden Quill read.

Too many thrillers are essentially machines to inject a shock into their readers every few minutes but Aguilar gives us a novel that is rich and atmospheric and a pleasure to read for those who like a story to unfold cleverly over a full arc, instead of coming in short mindless bursts.

Political Satire Fiction

With its acerbic narrative perspective, dark humour, and even its absurdity it’s hard to deny the ever-present element of plausibility in Tales of American Idiocy that makes it quite terrifying and at the very least a damning indictment of America’s political players and society itself.
