The BookViral Review:

The kind of Time Travel Science thriller that’s in dangerously short supply these days Back to the Distant Mirror proves considerably more contemplative than the vast majority of genre releases.

Grandly conceived, brilliantly executed and wildly entertaining. It’s a Science Fiction reader’s dream. A cosmic adventure story with a touch of the surreal, and yet it always feels grounded in its own deadly serious reality as it turns the premise of time travel into a literary playground.

The biggest failing of many Time Travel novels is a nagging sense of déjà vu with so many of the genre tropes being recycled that readers feel they’ve been down this road many, many times before. It takes talent to create something engrossing and new in the timeworn time-travel genre and Woodthrush has it in spades with a logical, intelligent approach to the conundrums of zipping through time.

One of the main reasons Back to the Distant Mirror works so well is its widely differing timelines which has allowed Woodthrush to come up with something new whilst taking the time to fully explore its premise. It’s a true science fiction novel, highly conceptual, with room for meaningful character development, spectacle and thrills to spare and once the big twist kicks in, there’s plenty of gritty fun reading to be had.

With a plot that skilfully resists following any familiar course Back to the Distant Mirror quickly establishes its rules and maintains a logical consistency throughout. Roy is bruisingly good as Woodthrush’s protagonist but Back to the Distant Mirror doesn’t thrive on him alone. He has created a superb cast of eclectic supporting characters which include Darnell. Jameela, Soma and the historical figure of ancient Greek general Pelopidas!

Teasing the brain and touching the heart each one is given moments of humour, terror or simple eccentricity. But Woodthrush never allows narrative twists and turns to multiply past the point of narrative sustainability as he effectively underlines the one undertaking that time-travel fiction can never truly allow: escape from ourselves.

As good as the genre gets and sure to leave its readers chaffing at the bit for Book 2 Back to the Distant Mirror is an unreservedly recommended Golden Quill read!

Thrillers are a much-debased genre these days, depending on generic plots and established tropes for much of their content. “No More Lies” has the standards of an earlier, more classic time, when plot, character and dialogue stood on their own, and narratives kept you riveted right up until the last page.
