The BookViral Review:
Readers looking for a genuinely original read need look no further than MAX – Hide and Seek Champion of the World. A novel that makes its readers feel like active participants in its unfolding narrative as the mystery of the Sasquatch’m unfolds.
It isn’t one of those novels that falls back on trite and tired tropes or overreaches for an unnecessary shock factor with Davis developing character perspectives which blunt the edge of predictability to meet the expectations of his readers.
Max’s story certainly makes for escapist reading but dig a little deeper and it’s also a poignant reflection of the times we live in, evoking a strong sense of place and human nature and it’s on this level that Davis ultimately ensnares our attention.
Central to Davis’ story is the archetypical character of Max. A young Sasquatch’m who is rescued by an ex-mercenary to be brought up in human company. And here Davis conveys a deep and touching relationship as Max comes to understand the full extent of his abilities and we come to understand the hidden world of the Sasquatch’m which has come under threat.
The best novels work because readers feel fully invested in the fate of the characters and Davis easily achieves this. Demonstrating a confident command of composition and economic storytelling as a clique of rugged and sensitive characters, like surfboard shaper and series protagonist Medford Haley, fight to return Max to his family and restore a balance which has been maintained for thousands of years.
Refreshingly different MAX – Hide and Seek Champion of the World proves a highly enjoyable and recommended read.
