The BookViral Review:

Sometimes when you read a novel, it’s so well-imagined that it just takes over and happens to you. Indeed, it’s a rare read that delivers on this level but that’s exactly what Signor’s In the Sight of God and Man does and for readers who appreciate meticulous story-craft and the ability to dodge broad genre clichés it certainly won’t disappoint with its taut, smart and satisfying plot.

In its broad outlines, “In the Sight of God and Man” is a traditional Western, with a story that has been told, in one form or another, a thousand times before but Signor serves it up with such authority and fine penmanship that it feels wholly original.

Signor clearly has a deep affinity and understanding for the genre, and it shows in every frame as we move between the alternating perspectives of Penryn Lloyd and the morally bankrupt Randy Thompson.

In the hands of a less confident author you can see how “In the Sight of God and Man” could have been jacked up into a one-level action story of revenge, but what makes it truly special is how Signor modulates narrative and theme.

In this respect the loss and spectre of revenge elements of the story are incidental and handled in a restrained, subtle manner that does not distract from the story but enhances it, bringing another dimension to an oft-told tale and reminding us that fresh and challenging Westerns like Signor’s will always be in vogue.

Westerns just don’t work without scenery and here Signor lets the size of the Patagonian sky and the colours of the land do their work as his prose evokes a rugged, austere beauty. And whilst the dialogue is spare, it reveals, disturbs and provokes a window to human consciousness and underlines the fact that unscripted events are invariably bigger than those caught in their web.

A beautiful immersive read that eschews predictability and leaves us with a perfectly pitched cliff-hanger of an ending, In the Sight of God and Man is an unreservedly recommended Golden Quill read.
