The BookViral Review

Genre – Memoirs

In The Battle Scarred Journey Wheeler invited us to peer beyond the veil of everyday day life and walk a darker path. It proved an incredibly emotive read and through his candidness, we were reminded of the indomitable spirit that so many embrace when forced to travel the path of adversity. But by his own admission his journey may have taken an altogether darker turn had it not been for the dogs he has rescued and the joy they have brought to his life.

Rehoming a vulnerable and unwanted dog is an amazing thing to do. It gives a dog a second chance at a happier life, but there are huge benefits to dog companionship for us too. On this level, When Your Best Friend is a Dog is both heartwarming and soul-shattering as Wheeler once again invites us into his life. Sharing his considerable insight and showing us how rehomed rescue dogs repay our kindness and patience in rebuilding their confidence with loyalty, fun and above all friendship.

Wheeler has never been an author to pull his punches. His prose is always earnest with a cutting self-effacing honesty that encourages reflection. To say he got dealt a poor hand is an understatement yet he remains overwhelmingly positive and his story is one from which many of us can learn. From the loss of the dogs he rescued and exciting opportunities, through the highs and lows of his life, he reminds us why dogs really are our best friends.

A must-read for those who share their lives with our canine friends to those who may be considering adopting a rescue dog, When Your Best Friend is a Dog is recommended without reservation. Just be warned to keep the tissue box handy because there are times you will want to cry!
