The BookViral Review:

In the heart wrenching narrative of a young boy speaking to a father no longer with him, ‘I’m all grown now, Papa’ is written through the eyes of the author, in a biographical journey through his young child-hood in Haiti.

In simple but eloquent language, Claude Louis draws the reader into his world,  highlighting charming village life and the undeniable love of his ‘Grann’ whilst gently creating awareness of the inequalities and hardships that exist in the outlying areas of Haiti.

The wonderful synchronicity of words and images capture the life of Claude Louis perfectly, as his lived life aligns with his thoughts of his father, who remains a constant companion to his son even from beyond the grave, thanks to his memory, which is kept alive by ‘Grann’, who reminds him to ‘look into a bucket of water’ whenever he asks about his Papa.

Louis expertly weaves the value of education into his story, and its importance even in the face of making a living despite adversity. His unerring belief is exquisitely captured in the last illustration, that of his growing self, gaining in stature and in attainment, all the while moving metaphorically closer to his Father.

Thus, Claude Louis uses his own lived experience to shine a spotlight on both the inequality and the need in areas such as his birthplace. For more privileged children in other parts of the world, and their parents, ‘I’m all grown now Papa’ creates awareness and empathy for others less fortunate and contributes to the fight to provide much needed aid and opportunity.

A beautifully illustrated and emotive read in its own right, ‘I’m all grown now, Papa’ is unreservedly recommended.

Authors writing about prejudice and racism in literature

Whilst the issues of prejudice and discrimination are multi-faceted and complicated beyond belief, a key moment for me was the day I picked up ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. Harper Lee implicitly drilled down the relative unfairness of human existence into my 12-year-old brain, creating a sense of outrage that has stayed with me throughout my life.
