The BookViral Review:
A superb critique of the banking investment mentality, and one that comes at a time when the financial community is especially vulnerable, Fresh Start proves a powerful and highly entertaining read.
With a traditional plot structure the actual details of the plot are not so important as the changes we see in the characters. And readers who are fans of intelligent characters exchanging whip-crack dialogue will be in their element here.
But Shaiken’s most impressive achievement in Fresh Start is to allow all the financial and courtroom wheeling and dealing to seem complicated and convincing, and yet always have it make sense.
This is a novel that can be followed by anybody, because the details of tax evasion, legal precedence and special assets management are filtered through transparent layers of personal and institutional greed. So we always know what’s going on and we always know why.
What Quincy Gunn Witherman and Stacey Milne do is illegal, but they use a little litany to excuse themselves. Which in Quincy‘s case is informed by revelatory timeline changes as Shaiken takes us back to 1798 and the following years as Quincy reflects on the foundations of his glittering real estate empire.
This approach by Shaiken results in a novel with multiple shades of gray. There’s no moralizing and Shaiken’s keen eye for character development brings a sense of visual verve that is synonymous with the best in a given genre. With few characters colder and more ruthless than Stacy Milne, or more convincing and authentic as 3J.
A superb read with appeal beyond its genre Fresh Start proves a cracking release from Shaiken and is unreservedly recommended!
