Far too many releases in the genre are so concerned with technology that the human characters almost get in the way. We get battles and escapades that we don’t care about, because we don’t know the people firing the weapons or direction their lives are taking. Yes, Bland gives us an undeniable action fest but he matches it with tempo, character details and style whilst pulling some really engaging tonal shifts to keep us on our toes.

Here, The Price Of Safety certainly aims to thrill its readers but it also demonstrates how a novel can confront a grave and controversial issue in our society. Namely that of mass surveillance and how it could evolve in the future.

Bland wants to show us technology’s dark side: all the stuff that’s there to make our lives easier – GPS, cell phones, PCs, “smart” houses – turned against us in a vast conspiracy and here he unashamedly succeeds by asking us to imagine them all condensed down to a single mandatory implant that unknowingly controls us by altering what we see!

Ferociously intense, furiously kinetic, like all good sci-fi, The Price Of Safety peers into the future to shed light on the present. Few authors are capable of marrying powerful ideas and entertainment with one more often than not sacrificed for the other but Bland peppers one gripping action set piece after another with trenchant details about a near-future where we are denied the most basic freedoms and privacy.
