In The Quest for Freedom, the opening volume of The Conquest Trilogy, readers meet a protagonist who has already chosen his path. Fletcher Rush is not searching for destiny—he has spent eleven years preparing to change the fate of his entire species.
Set on the world of Affer, where humanity has endured centuries of enslavement following its defeat in the Great War, the novel establishes its central conflict with remarkable clarity. Humans have become a conquered people, scattered among powerful races who regard them as little more than property. While most have accepted their circumstances, Fletcher refuses to do so. His carefully planned escape from slavery becomes the spark that ignites a rebellion capable of reshaping the world.
From its opening chapters, The Quest for Freedom embraces momentum. The world-building is another notable strength. Affer feels expansive and lived-in, shaped by centuries of conflict, prejudice, and shifting power. The ruined human capital of Admont stands out in particular, serving as both a powerful reminder of humanity’s downfall and a symbol of its potential resurgence.
